Monster Trout in „Minni“ and sudden availability in Breiðdalsá river

STOP PRESS: One experienced angler named Nils F. Jörgensen and his girlfriend Ásta had a bonanza this weekend on the „Minni“ with 8.1 kg and 5.1 kg fish caught among others, and what a fish they are as can be seen on these photos below in Nils story.

Also would like to mentione Tungulækur, which has in fact had an excellent spring season so far for sea-trout. For example Finish group of three anglers had this weekend 56 fish up to 85 cm! And of course we are counting the days until the salmon start running and we can open up our outstanding rivers. You might like to have a look at some of our current availabilities, for exampel on Breiðdalsá, three rods 4.-7.August, prime time stuff, as well as three rods during 19.-25.August. These are openings due to recent cancellations. There are other possibilities on Breidda as well as on the fast improving Jökla fishery, where among other openings we would like to point out 1.-5.July as well as 8.-11.July. Last year saw the salmon running Jökla earlier than before so these might turn out to be outstanding days.

But here is Nils story:

April the 28th april 2012
We fished from 18 - 21 the first evening. Heavy rain and wind made it a challenge but I managed to land Brown Trout of 64 and 72 cm en a small nymph.

April the 29th april 2012
Next morning the weather was absolute fantastic! Ásta made some good pan cakes for breakfast and first around 11:30, we went to the river.
In Stöðvarhylur, there was as usual trout spread out all the way down through the pool. Ásta started fishing the first half of the pool and we saw all kids of nymphs drift right besides the big trout but as most of the times here, they are VERY difficult to catch and easily spooked.I took the last half of the pool and up by the little island in the upper pool, the drift of the fly line stopped and I set the hook in a quite big Trout. It took off up to the top of the pool and stayed in the deep hole. Then it went down in the lower part where Ásta was trying to net him but the net was way to small. Then the fish took off again down through the fence and under the old bridge. With loose line, I managed to get the rod under the fence and bridge where I could  continue the battle there. The trout now "parked" in the deep whole under the bridge and eventually the little hooked pulled. "Damn" I said, "why do these really big guys always get away"?Nothing the do about that other than go back to the lodge and enjoy Ástas homemade pizza.

Later, I had a few hours for myself where I landed a Trout of 50 cm on a small black streamer. Then I picked up Ásta and Erna and tried the lower river where a Trout was chasing my fly once but that was all.The evening was coming and we went up to Stöðvarhylur again since we did not have time to try all the interesting pools. After some time, I spotted a group of 4-6 very big Trout feeding heavily in a small area. They where even taking on the surface. This being in the end of april made it really interesting. I sneaked in on the fish and started casting. After many casts and different flies, something big took and I was in. This was a very big fish, possible the biggest I have had on in a river. My 5 weight rod got pushed and the fish was giving an absolute fight for its life. We followed it the the top of the pool we he rested a bit in the deep before he went all the way down to the fence crossing the river but this time, I had brought a huge salmon net and Ásta managed to net it this time. I have caught many fish in my life but this one was a relief! What a huge monster that was in the net, unbelievable a trout in this small river can become this big. We weighed it to 8,1 kg. Minni still has its magic! The really monsters are just old and wise.We shot some photos and video before putting him back to his home. What a experience! We enjoyed the moment but noticed the other big ones were starting to feed heavily again on the surface. Ásta and I approached them and started casting but nothing happened before a small brown klinkhammer dry fly was put on. I nose from a big Trout we saw go over the fly and I stroked it and was in. I gave Ásta the rod and now she could feel the strength of these fish. The Trout went all the way up in the next pool were we were close to landing it but then it went down to the first pool were I nettet it down by the famous fence. 8 kg is out of this world but here a monster under more normal circumstances, 5 kg team work Brown Trout! Is this for real? This is properly once in a lifetime experience and we took some pictures, released it and then tried to understand memories this evening.
That was the last cast of the trip and no what a trip. You never know about Minnivallalækur do you.“
